Caitlin Clark’s offseason schedule could see her skip new Unrivaled League despite being offered a lucrative deal.
WNBA and Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark likely ditching millions by not joining Unrivaled league
The upstart Unrivaled League was formed to help WNBA players earn additional income playing basketball at home. As a viable alternative to playing overseas, thirty-four players have signed up so far. But there is no mention of Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark.
After her rookie WNBA season ended, the 22-year-old mentioned that she would not be playing basketball in the offseason. She said she was looking towards helping her body recover with seven full months in hand.
However, as the new league started to take shape, questions arose about whether they would bank upon the rookie phenom. Reports of a Lionel Messi-esque pitch did the rounds, where the league would give her massive incentives along with a salary exceeding a million for just three months of work.
They even expanded on their original roster restrictions to sign two of her Indiana Fever teammates and her best friend Kate Martin. However, as per an ESPN report, the superstar is likely to ditch the idea.
Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark will not play in the new 3-on-3 league Unrivaled in its inaugural season, a source with knowledge of the situation told ESPN on Wednesday.
Michael Voepel said about Caitlin Clark
Senior writer Voepel’s words suggest that Caitlin Clark might look towards joining in the future. The Unrivaled League announced its rosters earlier on Wednesday, but crucially, has left two wildcard spots open.
Caitlin Clark’s offseason schedule suggests Unrivaled is off her list
Caitlin Clark’s offseason schedule gives an idea about her possible participation in the Unrivaled League. She has too much on her plate to commit to more than two months for basketball.
To start with, another big player missing from Unrivaled’s roster is Sabrina Ionescu. Being co-founder Breanna Stewart‘s teammate, one would have assumed she would automatically be a part of it.
However, Ionescu is set to resume her NBA’s All-Star weekend 3-point battle against Stephen Curry. With that scheduled to take place on around February 15 next year, it is bang in the middle of Unrivaled’s schedule.
Ionescu declared that she would likely share the court with Clark in that 2 vs 2 battle. Therefore, it is unlikely they will be able to manage both. The new league does not have games that week, but a three-point contest might be too much for their tired bodies.
Additionally, Clark will appear at an event in Kansas City, Missouri, on February 4. This again makes it difficult for her to juggle playing basketball and also speak at this event. Therefore, the chances of her skipping the Unrivaled League this season are high.
Clark has taken a different approach to marketing her brand. Playing in amateur golf tournaments, speaking at various events, and attending forums for women’s empowerment are some of the ways she intends to spend her time in the offseason.
