Caitlin Clark’s boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, is heading into a new coaching job with Butler University.
McCaffery, 26, secured the role after joining the Indiana Pacers last summer as a team assistant coach. The job was his first coaching gig after playing the sport at the University of Iowa.
The Iowa City native played for the Hawkeyes for six seasons, starting in 88 of his 166 appearances. Across his collegiate career, McCaffery averaged 4.5 points and 3.2 assists per game.
With Clark getting drafted by the Indiana Fever with the first overall pick in the WNBA draft earlier this year, McCaffery moved to Hoosier State and took the job with the Pacers.
His move to become an assistant coach for the Bulldogs was first reported by Akeem Glaspie of the Indianapolis Star. Scott Agness of the Fieldhouse Files and David Eickholt of 247Sports also reported his move from the Pacers to Butler.
McCaffery joins the Bulldogs staff as his younger brother, Patrick, is set to transfer from Iowa and play hoops at Butler. Their younger brother, Jack, is also joining the program next year.
The game runs in the household as Connor’s father, Fran, is the head men’s basketball coach at Iowa.
McCaffery is replacing former NBA No 1 overall pick Greg Oden on Butler’s staff per Glaspie.
Oden was a high school basketball legend in Indiana and played in the NBA for seven years after a pitstop at Ohio State.
Butler head coach Thad Matta is entering his third season in charge of the program since being hired in 2022. The Bulldogs went 14-18 in his first year and 18-15 last season.
Clark and the Fever are sixth in WNBA standing with a 19-19 record and two games left to play. The former Iowa star is the frontrunner to win the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year award.
McCaffery and Clark started dating in April 2023 and made their relationship Instagram official in August that same year.
