No Caitlin Clark. No Sabrina Ionescu. The 3-point contest for the 2024 WNBA All-Star festivities will not feature two of the league’s most renowned shooters, as they were notably absent from the list of participants released by the league on Wednesday.
The WNBA announced that the 3-point contest participants will be Stefanie Dolson, Allisha Gray, Jonquel Jones, Marina Mabrey and Kayla McBride.
Although Caitlin Clark is touted as a sharpshooter with unlimited range, she is shooting 33.2% this season, which is in the top 40 league-wide.
Meanwhile, Sabrina Ionescu, who went head-to-head with Steph Curry in a one-on-one during last year’s NBA All-Star festivities, is shooting 34.5% from beyond the arc this season.
Dolson, the Washington Mystics center, is shooting 50.0% from beyond the arc. Gray from the Atlanta Dream is shooting 36.0%.
Jones, Ionescu’s New York Liberty teammate, is shooting 40.4% from distance this season. Mabrey, who was recently traded from the Chicago Sky to the Connecticut Sun, is making 34.4% of her 3-point attempts, while Kayla McBride is shooting an efficient 42.4% from beyond the arc.
No Caitlin Clark in skills challenge either
Caitlin Clark is also not in the Skills Challenge despite her record-breaking assists numbers.
Although she wasn’t named to the 3-point contest and skills challenge, Caitlin Clark is still poised to take center stage at the 2024 WNBA All-Star Weekend in Phoenix. The 20th edition of the All-Star Game is already historic, with Footprint Center selling out its 18,422 capacity.
Caitlin Clark, who garnered the most fan votes for the All-Star Game, will debut alongside fellow rookie standout Angel Reese as part of Team WNBA.
The upcoming game will showcase a unique matchup, pitting the WNBA All-Stars against the US Women’s National Team, which will represent the United States in the Olympics.
Clark’s inclusion in the All-Star festivities follows her record-breaking performance on Wednesday, where she amassed 19 assists against the Dallas Wings, surpassing Courtney Vandersloot’s previous WNBA single-game record of 18 assists.
Earlier this season, Clark made history as the first rookie in WNBA history to achieve a triple-double during the Fever’s victory over the New York Liberty with 19 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds.
Currently, Clark leads the league with an average of 8.2 assists per game, setting her on course to establish the highest assist average by a rookie in WNBA history.
