Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark’s entrance to the WNBA was a tumultuous journey for the rookie superstar. While the No. 1 overall pick arrived to the big leagues with an unprecedented level of popularity and a record-breaking Nike deal, Clark’s name also quickly became weaponized by online pundits with hateful purposes.
Due to the fact that Clark is a straight, white woman from Iowa, assumptions were made about her political allegiances. The same assumptions were made about Clark’s boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, a fellow Iowa alum, who works as an assistant for the Indiana Pacers.
However, McCaffery, who celebrated his one-year anniversary with Clark in April, appeared to set the record straight while watching former First Lady Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, August 20.
Based on the searing comments Obama made about Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, and her beautiful words about Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, McCaffery’s simple reaction said a lot.
“Who is going to tell him [Trump] that the job that he is currently seeking might just be one of those ‘Black jobs,’” Obama quipped to thunderous applause in Chicago. “It’s his same old con, doubling down on ugly, misogynistic, racist lies as a substitute for real ideas and solutions that will actually make people’s lives better.”
As for Clark, she does her best to stay out of politics and keep basketball her main focus. However, the 22-year-old addressed the issue of her name being used to fuel racist and misogynist attacks on other WNBA players when directly asked about the topic back in June.
“It’s disappointing,” Clark said. “Everybody in our world deserves the same amount of respect. The women in our league deserve the same amount of respect. People should not be using my name to push those agendas… It’s not acceptable.
“Just treating every single woman in this league with the same amount of respect — I think it’s just a basic human thing that everybody should do. Just be a kind person and treat them how you want to be treated.”
