Renee Montgomery calls out hate-fueled behavior
Caitlin’s fans at times exceed the limits of what is allowed.
The rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese has been a hot topic since their college days, sparking intense debates and heated exchanges on the court. But recently, some fans have taken things way too far, crossing lines that should never be crossed. Now, retired WNBA star Renee Montgomery is stepping in to address the disturbing behavior.
Angel Reese has bravely shared her experiences with the racial abuse she’s received from some of Clark’s fans. Disturbingly, some individuals have even created fake AI xxx-rated images of Reese and sent them to her family. This appalling behavior has prompted Montgomery, who played in the WNBA from 2009 to 2019, to speak out against these extreme fans on her Montgomery & Company podcast.
Montgomery didn’t hold back, saying, “Something sinister is happening online with Caitlin’s fanbase and these stans that needs to be addressed.” She made it clear that this kind of behavior isn’t representative of most fans.
“A lot of the fans on social media feel the same – that ain’t a representation of us. Y’all not like us, they not like us,” she added. Montgomery emphasized that while it’s normal for fans to be passionate and even antagonistic, crossing into racism, sexism, and violence is unacceptable. “It’s OK to be a hater in sports, hating in sports is a part of the game. But being racist, sexist and violent with your words – come on now, what are we doing?“
Angel Reese details horrific fan abuse
She also pointed out that Caitlin Clark isn’t encouraging or condoning this hate. Reese has praised Clark as an “amazing player” and doesn’t believe Clark supports this negativity. However, Montgomery feels that the hateful elements have unfortunately found a place within Clark’s fanbase.
On her Unapologetically Angel podcast, Reese revealed the extent of the abuse she’s faced. “Sometimes it is very disrespectful,” she said, noting that she has dealt with significant racism and even received death threats. “When it comes to death threats – I’m talking about people coming down to my address, following me home – it has come down to that.”
Despite their competitive moments on the court, both Reese and Clark have shown respect for each other’s talents. Clark has downplayed the notion of a personal rivalry, stating, “I’m pretty sure that the only people who view this as a rivalry is all of you.” She added, “For us, it’s just a game of basketball. That’s what it is. If it’s going to help move the game forward then absolutely (she’s a rival). That’s amazing. That’s what it should be.”
