Suffice to say, plenty of people reached out to Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark to celebrate her history-making triple-double in her team’s 83-78 win over the New York Liberty.
Speaking to reporters, Clark said that “nobody reached out” before smirking
Triple-doubles have become increasingly common in the WNBA over the last two years. Until last Saturday, though, no rookie had ever achieved the feat.
Clark became the first when he dropped 19 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists on the Liberty.
For the 6’0″ guard, beating the WNBA’s reigning runner-up was the more important achievement, and she downplayed her individual scoring contributions.
“I’m just happy we won,” she said after the game. “I take a lot of pride in being able to do a lot of different things for this team. I think we’re really good when I can get the ball off the glass and just go in transition and find my teammates and set them up.”
Clark’s performance to start the season drew plenty of attention, albeit not for totally positive reasons. She was struggling with the transition to the WNBA, and the Fever’s 1-8 start only compounded matters.
Now, the No. 1 overall pick is finding her footing at the same time Indiana is turning things around. The Fever are 6-3 in their last nine games, and Clark is averaging 15.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 9.3 assists while shooting 42.2 percent from the floor during that stretch.
Her triple-double came days after she was selected to represent Team WNBA in the All-Star Game, joining teammates Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston.
Clark will assuredly collect more triple-doubles and All-Star nods in the ensuing years.
