Angel Reese makes basketball history not seen since Shaquille O’Neal in 1993
The Chicago Sky rookie stands alone in the WNBA record books after Friday’s game.
Angel Reese has added yet another WNBA record to her resume, a feat she now shares with an NBA Hall of Famer.
Reese scored 13 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in the Chicago Sky’s 82-80 loss to the Connecticut Sun on August 23. The rookie also scored 19 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in her team’s 86-68 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on August 18.
Though the pair of losses dropped the Sky to 11-17 on the season, they also put Reese in the record books as the first player in WNBA history to record at least 20 rebounds in consecutive games.
The feat also put Reese in some rare company. The last time any rookie had two consecutive 20-rebound games was in 1993, when fellow LSU star Shaquille O’Neal accomplished the feat with the Orlando Magic.
Reese, who led LSU to its only basketball national championship in 2023, has forged a close relationship with O’Neal. The NBA legend escorted Reese during her senior day ceremony at LSU, joining her family in wearing matching shirts that read, “Bayou Barbie is My Favorite Senior.”
“It’s been great. Who’s better than a person like Shaq?” Reese said after the game, via ESPN. “He’s really smart, not just on the basketball court, but just in life. He has his doctorate, so he’s educated, being a lot of things outside of basketball. Being able to have somebody like that has been a great inspiration for me. And of course enjoying the moment like this with him and the rest of my family was fun tonight.”
