Renee Montgomery is a former WNBA All-Star who won the Sixth Woman of the Year award in 2012. The 5-foot-7 guard has two championships to her name and transitioned to the front office after her playing career was over.
Nowadays, she is a vice president and part owner of the Atlanta Dream.
To say that Montgomery has had a significant impact on the league would be an understatement. This is why when she speaks, people tend to listen.
In a recent episode of her podcast “Montgomery & Company,” the former No. 4 overall pick went on a lengthy tirade attacking a certain segment of Caitlin Clark fans. According to Montgomery, the unacceptable behavior of what she has labeled “stans” of the Indiana Fever superstar simply has no room in the WNBA.
“This group cannot be a representation of what the WNBA would want in their league,” Montgomery stated. “This is our league. … That ain’t a representation of us. Y’all not like us. They not like us, okay?”
Montgomery then went on to say that, in her mind, there’s nothing wrong with fan bases hating each other. In fact, she believes that is part of the intense competition between teams and their respective fans.
At the same time, however, Montgomery is adamant that these so-called Clark stans have crossed a line.
“For instance, a diehard (Atlanta) Falcons fans can hate the (New Orleans) Saints,” she said. “But they will be going a bit too far if they created nude AI pictures of Saints players and sent them to the Saints players’ families. That’s what Caitlin stans have done to Angel Reese.
“It’s OK to be a hater in sports,” she continued. “Hating in sports is a part of the game. I like when our fans are so engaged and so passionate that they just don’t like the other team. But being racing, sexist and violent with your words? C’mon now. What are we doing? C’mon now. That’s not acceptable.”
Montgomery made it clear she has nothing against Clark. In fact, she even stated she believes the rookie sensation has exceeded her massive expectations upon entering the WNBA.
“Something sinister is happening online with Caitlin’s fan base and these stans that need to be addressed,” she said. “So all I’m saying is, sports hate is OK. It’s acceptable. It’s actually welcome. We love the passionate fans. But some of y’all, y’all are taking it too far, man. Do better.”
